What is Pilates? Simply put, Pilates exercises are movements performed in a slow, controlled manner, in rhythm with your breathing. When the range of movement is small, these exercises are particularly suitable for anyone who has limited movement, due to a previous injury or illness or maybe just wear and tear! And for beginners. There are endless modifications that can be made to these exercises to accommodate even the least mobile person and age is certainly no barrier. On the other hand, if you are a fit individual, or have previous Pilates experience, the exercises and range of movement can be increased to challenge you.
Pilates emphasizes the connection between mind and body and regular exercise in this way will improve posture, flexibility and muscle tone. It works by rebalancing the body, altering the way in which we recruit muscles to produce movements. It works on strengthening the stabilizing muscles which lie closest to and support the spine.
